The lovely ladies from Japanese magazine Madam Figaro came round to the studio to have a chat and take some pictures. They met Maud and Norman the rabbits, and took some lovely photos!

The ‘Pendurance Challenge’ – 24 hr non-stop drawing in London directed by suggestions from social networking platform Twitter.

The challenge was to complete 50 London locations in 24 hours, riding to each location on a Boris Bike and working on site on a massive roll of paper. I teamed up with webzine Think-Work-Play, and together we made a wager; if I didn’t complete this challenge, i’d face a humiliating forfeit. So the race was on!

How it worked was Twitter users would tweet their favourite London location, with a good anecdote attached to it, then we would make our way to the chosen place, I would draw it, and it would be uploaded immediately to Flickr. Barclays Cycle Hire had kindly given me a bike key for the duration of the project, and me, my Boris bike and the team at Think-Work-Play started out from Charing Cross at 12pm.

The challenge was a lot harder than I thought it’d be. Not because of the drawing, but when the exhuastion kicked in around 1am, it felt really hard to get back on the bike and ride to the next location. However, with one hour’s sleep at Think-Work-Play’s offices, I completed the challenge, finishing on time at 12pm beneath the London eye, completing my final (50th) illustration.

Then went to have a well earned beer.

Boris Bikes have revolutionised cycling for Londoners, but few have used them in the way that Lizzie Mary Cullen has: to draw 50 places in London, as requested by Twitter, in 24 hours.

Together with the encouragement of Think-Work-Play webzine, Lizzie travelled around central London, directed by an international Twitter audience, capturing locations on a giant roll of paper which she carried on her back in a stunt that she calls "pendurance".

The marathon effort was the result of a wager Cullen had made. Had she not completed all 50 drawings before midday on Thursday, her forfeit was apparently to have "electricity [...] passed through her body", according to the event website. Ouch.

Locations suggested by tweeters ranged from the tourist hotspots of Covent Garden and St Pauls to little-known gems of Kensal Green cemetary and the sewer lamp on Carting Lane. Online participants could keep track of Cullen's whereabouts by live-tracking her on Google Maps.

In an interview with Wired.co.uk, Cullen said the challenge allowed her to discovery new parts of London: " Goodwins Court is an amazing little street behind Leicester Square tube station. It was like something out of Harry Potter with old gas lamps and windows -- to be drawing it at 3am was gorgeous."

When we spoke to Cullen, she was celebrating finishing the challenge (and avoiding the forfeit) and had been up for 32 hours straight. She said that it was the time pressures, rather than the locations, which were most demanding: "It was so much more difficult than I thought it would be. The tiredness really kicked in at 1am, after we started at 12pm."

"We had no breaks and were eating and drinking on the go. This morning I really struggled to capture the magic and the energy of Brick Lane, the main contender was just exhaustion."

Although Cullen completed the challenge, she admits that it was a bit of a race for time. "It was a bit racy at the end -- if you see the London Eye picture, standards of drawing went rapidly downhill -- it's basically just a circle with dots on and a sign saying 'London Eye'!" Cullen laughs.
